In recent times one of my local grocers was first to market to make a personal barcode scanner available to ease the consumers shopping experience. Some will argue about whether it is an ingenious idea or not. It does seem to have some added benefits for both the store and the consumer. However, it just has not caught on in popularity with most consumers. Some are unfamiliar or afraid of or just do not see the value of the technology. However, the latest technology in the evolution of a barcode scanner is that most Smart phones now come equipped with one or have an app that can be down loaded to turn your phone into a scanner. Manufacturers have caught on and in countless adds now barcodes are being added that will provide consumers with information on their products or give an inside savings to those using a scanner. This incentive is causing more familiarity and I think will change at least some people’s attitudes toward the technology.
