In the future, it looks like we won’t have to use barcodes for labeling our items at supermarkets anymore. The folks over at Toshiba Tec have come up with a new scanner that renders barcodes obsolete. Instead of reading a barcode to identify and object to provide a price – the scanner instantly recognizes the merchandise itself (regardless of whether it is fresh produce or packaged goods). The technology is so advanced that it can even differentiate apples from different companies! Talk about impressive.
Using a scanner like this can speed up the supermarket checking out process since it is touted to be faster than barcode scanners and eliminates the need for users to input data manually – especially when it comes to merchandise like fresh fruit and vegetables that don’t have barcodes on them. A pretty useful upgrade to the regular barcode scanner if you ask me. Check out the video demonstration above.
