Socket Mobile Receives U.S. Patent for Barcode Scanner With ...

NEWARK, CA — (Marketwire) — 03/21/12 — Socket Mobile, Inc. (NASDAQ: SCKT), an innovative provider of mobile productivity solutions, today announced that the United States Patent and Trademark Office has issued U.S. Patent 8,139,049, titled “Cordless Scanner and Stylus,” that covers all cordless hand-held devices implementing both a scanner and a stylus within a common housing. The patent covers styli for both resistive and capacitive touchscreens, capacitive being the type used by most smartphones and tablets in the market today.

“Not only does this patent protect the shape of our handheld scanners, but by including capacitive styli, it reaffirms our investment in research and development to stay competitive in the growing Apple and Android markets,” said Len Ott, chief technology officer at Socket Mobile.

The combination scanner and stylus is useful to users who need to both scan barcodes and manually enter information into a PDA, tablet, or smartphone.

“For the mobile worker, placing the stylus on the end of the scanner is akin to placing an eraser at the end of a pencil,” continued Ott. “Both devices provide convenience, increase efficiency, and cut costs by eliminating the need to purchase and keep track of yet another tool.”

This is not the first recognition that Socket Mobile has received from the federal government for its technology innovation. On March 13, 2012, Socket was also awarded Patent #8,132,732, recognizing the improved user feedback of their Cordless Handheld Scanners. These new patents expand Socket Mobile-s Patent Portfolio to twenty-five total, with five that pertain specifically to the handheld scanners.
